After recently debuting their Xbox One, it’s now time for the folks at Sony to unveil their next generation console in the Sony PlayStation 4. Unveiled at last night’s E3 conference, the console has won over quite a few gamers based alone on the fact that it’s $100 cheaper than Microsoft’s offering, will allow users to purchase and play as many pre-owned games as they’d like, and doesn’t require users to remain online to play video games. The system’s aesthetics look very similar to the new Xbox, and it is set to hit the retail scene during the same time (Q4 although no exact release date was given).

 

The PS4 is equipped with a single chip 8 core x86 AMD Jaguar processor, 8GB GDDR5 RAM, and 500GB of storage. The new DualShock 4 wireless controllers are packed with some impressive motion sensing technology that utilizes a six-axis sensor for an entirely new gaming experience. While Sony did a great job countering all of the concerns gamers gad with the Xbox One, they also snuck in some not so compelling details about the PS4. In the past PlayStation’s online network was free (it wasn’t very good though for what it’s worth). Now the PS4 will require gamers to pay a “Less Than $5 per month” fee for a subscription to the PlayStation Plus network. Both consoles have their pros and cons, but it’s clear that online gaming (specifically Xbox Live) is the reason that many gamers (including us) prefer Xbox 360 over PS3. It will be interesting to see what kind of online interface Sony will be able to build out now that customers are paying a similar to fee to that of an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
